2009 Bulldawgs, A Look from the Sidelines.

Auburn's Neiko Thorpe, left, and Daren Bates attempt to stop Georgia's Caleb King from scoring the game winning touchdown fduring the Bulldogs 31-24 victory over the Auburn Tigers at Sanford Stadium in Athens, Ga. on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009.

This time next week I’ll be slathering icy hot onto my bruised and battered knees the day after the first UGA football game for the 2010 season.  In the past I was never a big sports person, but recent years adventures on the sidelines have made me a massive fan.  This will be my first UGA football season as a staffer at a newspaper.  The big difference is use of better gear ( lenses that

July Through My Lens

Barbara Phillips racks up a game of nine-ball at Lucky Dawg Billiards on Tuesday, July 27, 2010 in Athens, Ga. (Richard Hamm/Staff/richard.hamm@onlineathens.com)

Here’s the previously promised July update.  July brought the first sign of University of Georgia Football with the Countdown to Kickoff.  I’m frothing out the mouth to be on the UGA sidelines now that I have access to a 300 and a 400 2.8.  Other than the first signs of football, July was just hotter than June.  BOOOO HOT WEATHER.   Now some pictures for your viewing pleasure.

June through my lens.

Here comes another one of those extremely long catch up post since I’ve been negelcting my blog again.  June was a month of ups and downs.  I was working the day shift from 9-6 when most of the big things in the month happened later in the evening.  Oh well.  By June I was only mildly beginning to be annoyed by the heat.  Later in the summer, I did everything I could to avoid going

Awards, Awards..WEEEEEEE!!!!

Officer Jay Parker is overcome with emotion as he talks about his former K-9 partner, Ayak, during a memorial service for Ayak at Curry Creek Park in Jefferson, Ga. on Friday, June 6, 2010. The K-9 officer was found dead in Parkers home on Thursday, May 27, 2010 of unknown causes. (Richard Hamm/Staff/richard.hamm@onlineathens.com)

Now that I’m a staffer at a newspaper I’ve decided to stop being so lazy and actually enter some photo contest these day.  I entered a few shots for the June Georgia Press Association monthly clip contest and won 2nd and 3rd place in the general news category for the photos below.

Dock Diving Dogs Make It Around the World.

Cheyenne, a chocolate lab, runs full speed before jumping into the pool at the Dixie Dock Dogs Great American Dawg Jump at Oconee Veteran's Park on Friday, July 2, 2010 in Oconee County, Ga.

A few weeks ago, I got the chance to shoot something you may have seen at 3.a.m on ESPN 3.14 pi  dog dock diving.  Basically, dogs make a running jump off a dock into a pool of water and are judged by their distance.  The current world record stands at 28 feet and the measure from the dogs butt, or where the tail meets the dogs as the announcer so eloquently put it.  The photos

I'm back.....Again.....for good.....probably

My new wife enjoys a sunset at Aligator Point.

So, again I’m coming back to the ol’ blog.  Major changes since the last post.  I’ve officially become a full time photojournalist at the Athens Banner-Herald.  Yay.   I’m a homeowner.  Yay.  And, I’m a husband.  Yay, but howabout letting me catch my breath before the next big life change.  So, I’ve shot a ton of stuff over the past months, and I’ve got a lot I want to share, so rather than offer up a

Sportraits Galore

I shoot a lot of sportraits now days.  I used to get freaked out by the heavy reliance on flash to make something interesting, but now I think of them as a chance to try something different on a relatively low stress assignment.  My strategy is to first find out what sport and position the athlete plays and learn as much about him/her as possible.  If there is a recent accomplishment ( a know hitter,

Tailgating Taken Down A Knotch

Last year I went to the North Campus of the University of Georgia and shot the tailgating trash after the UGA v Auburn game.  It was pretty trashed and people were pretty angry about.  In response UGA has addopted new tailgating rules to cut back on the garbage.  You can read about the new rules at Online Athens.

Not Fit For Print - Feb. 7-14

This will be the first installment of a new regular posting featuring photos that never ran in print from various assignments.  Not to say these pictures weren’t good enough, but there’s only so much room to run my photos (especially in today’s shrinking news pages).  Some stories have dozens of good picture possibilities and only enough room for one or two photos.  This posting will contain photos were the story ran between Feb.

A week of work in play

Over the past week or so I’ve had the dominant art on the front page of the Athens Banner-Herald from Sunday, March 7 – Today.  I thought I’d share the pages to give you an idea of what I do on an average week.  I also want to give credit to the amazing page designers at the paper for always finding the best way to use my photos.
