Bulldog Boxing @ The Georgia Theatre

Last weekend I had my first experience shooting boxing at the Bulldawg Brawl, an event put on my a student organization called UGA H.E.R.O. that helps children with AIDS.
It was an evening of amateur boxers that can only be described as three rounds of furiously thrown wild punches. These poor kids honestly pummeled the crap out of each other and had a good time doing it.
The lighting was pretty easy to work with, but getting a good position was a challenge. I made some decent frames but I hope to shoot some more boxing again soon to do a better job, it took a while to be able to spot the flow of the match and spot a coming punch.

Portraits for Sara

A few weeks ago I learned an old photo buddy, Sara Guevara, was recently diagnosed with Stage II Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Luckily, it is treatable but go figure, very expensive. MLK Day of Service

Some people across the country do a pretty cool thing on MLK day instead of sitting around in sweat pants watching the Price is Right and actually give back to the community. For the past three years, I’ve had the pleasure to document this.

This year in Athens there were over 40 different volunteer opportunities, most of which had a good number of participants. Activities ranged from urban beautification to fixing bikes for a local non-profit. I tried to bounce around and show the large numbers of people and the variety of ways they gave back.

Best of Basketball…so far

I’ve shot a good bit of basketball lately so I figured I’d do a best of so far in the season. I’ve only done one high school game and a handful of UGA (both men & women’s). I’ve been dealing with some lighting issues at Coliseum I regularly work at but I’m starting to figure it out. They installed a new set of corner lights that do at a 1/2 of light, but they also make there way into any frame shot from most angles. There are a few sweet spots where you can avoid them but it’s tricky to say the least.

Mr. Hamm goes to the Capitol

Monday I had to brave the gauntlet of Atlanta traffic for my first trip to the Georgia Capitol to cover the first day of the 2012 Georgia legislative season. I’d never been under the gold dome before nor had much experience of covering the thrills of southern politickin but it was pretty fun.

There were a few ceremonial votes, some tributes Georgia football and late great game calling legend Larry Munson and not much else. It was the first day and all.

Year in photos

Summing up a year in photos is always a pain. How do you sum up 80,000 pictures, countless hours, 4 dozen notepads of names & info and a year of growth in a few dozen pictures? For me, I look at the pictures I shot in 2011 that I couldn’t or didn’t see in 2010. I’m looking for growth and hoping next year will bring more growth.

Cops and their Kids on a day off

Been a while since I’ve posted on the ol’ blog so I’m going to try and post some of my favorite stuff from the past two months.

I’m starting out with a fun assignment involving local cops in a much different environment than I’m used to. A local park was holding a father-son event for local police and I went out looking for some features. I’m used to seeing cops in bad situations (not the cops, the environment) so it was cool to see them get to enjoy a fun day with the kids. Here’s a few of my favorite frames.

Bulldogs defeat…well…Bulldogs

Last Saturday I was on the sidelines as the UGA Bulldogs defeated the Mississippi State Bulldogs 24-10 at Sanford Stadium. It was a noon kickoff (boo bad light) but the action was pretty good.

The UGA defense seemed to step it up sacking Miss St. quarterback Chris Relf several times. There were also several loose balls, a few interceptions and some really big, game making moments. Not much more you can hope for. Here’s some of my favorite frames.

The Wedding of Blake & Merritt

So a few weeks ago I went down to Savannah to shoot the wedding of two of my newspaper co-workers. I was working with old photog buddy and partner Kelly Wegel which made the task of covering a wedding so much easier. Future brides, yes you want a second photographer, it’s worth it.

The wedding was a blast. Definitely the best wedding I’ve shot thus far with a beautiful setting in downtown Savannah.
